Prisms suspends fully-realized 3D worlds above visitors’ heads in massive LED boxes.

ESI Design created a striking digital media installation for the lobby of HSBC Place in Edmonton, Alberta, visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass facade. Suspended from the ceiling, these six 260-square-foot LED boxes are a vibrant addition to the city, day and night. The boxes are complemented by sleek LED columns that draw visitors to the property’s retail mall.

As creative and art director on the project I developed the visual approach and style for these unique displays. I worked collaboratively with the client and hands-on with the motion and VFX specialists to make a system of generative media that changes over the days and seasons.

Creative + Art Direction

Prisms mixes hyperlocal imagery with abstract art. It shows scenes inspired by Edmonton, the nighttime sky, and the ocean, and incorporates live data including time of day, season and weather.

Creating content for 5-sided 3D forms rather than for a flat surface presented a unique design challenge. The content needed to give the illusion of depth and look convincing from every angle. Collaborating closely with the technical director, we developed ideas that allowed us to use techniques from video game design to accomplish the seamless result.
